SEO Tips: Increase Traffic

Post By BLOGADMIN in Boost Your Site

Traffic has a major influence on how successful your site ranks in Google. Without traffic your site basically remains in one position, letting everyone else surpass it.

It used to be, that if a website had all the search engine tags & was optimised, that it would far out rank a website that was not optimised. Now, that the majority of websites are appropriately optimised for search engines, it has levelled out the playing field, making the web a very competitive place. However, the main differentiating factor is the traffic. Even if a website was not properly optimised but had traffic, it would still out rank a site that was optimised with no or minimal traffic. There are other factors to consider, however we can't give away all our secrets...

So now we look for other avenues such as social networking sites to improve & generate traffic to our sites.

The type of marketing you persue depends on what type of business you have.
Here are some tips:

- Make sure your website is informative
- Get onto Facebook & other social networking sites
- Try a promotion
- Visit our website to download a token, bring in store to recieve a discount on your next purchase
- Implement refer a friend system
- Implement a blog
- Send out a monthly newsletter
- Vamp up your email signature - include links to your site

Make sure you link to your website whereever you can, to make it very easy for people to access from your marketing material.

SEO Tips: Facebook

Post By BLOGADMIN in Boost Your Site

Whether we like it or not, Facebook® has become an extremely valuable tool in the marketing of our businesses.
With such a large audience & vast array of target markets, businesses can reach out to more & more prospective clients; we can't afford not be to connected.

By setting up a Facebook Page, Group or Profile for our business, we can constantly promote, contact & interact with the millions of Facebook members.

If you are a little 'old school' & find yourself sitting on the fence, here are some statistics that make you fall off...

- Facebook has more than 500 million active users
- 50% of  active users log on to Facebook in any given day
- The average user has 130 friends
- People spend over 700 billion minutes per month on Facebook

- There are over 900 million objects that people interact with (pages, groups, events and community pages)
- The average user is connected to 80 community pages, groups and events
- The average user creates 90 pieces of content each month
- More than 30 billion pieces of content (weblinks, news stories, blog posts, notes, albums, etc.) shared monthly.
- About 70% of Facebook users are outside the United States
- There are more than 150 million active users currently accessing Facebook through their mobile devices.

The above statistics are taken from the Facebook website & can be found here

So if that isn't enough to knock you off the fence, I don't know what is.
Perhaps you should be seriously considering retirement...

So, you've decided that you better get on with it & get your business on Facebook, so, how do you do that??

Well you have a couple of options:

1. Do it yourself. If you are comfortable with computers, try to sign up & login. Then read & play & click your way around. Upload some images, write on your wall, find friends & make the connections. Then look for pages & how to create a page.
Pages & groups are where you can be separate from your business profile & really use some of the Facebook business tools such a ads or badges to promote & market.

2. Just too much for you? Ask a family member to manage this for you. A son or daughter or even grand children are perfect. They are eager to help, learn & of course they like to show you how to do something. Read the above & ask the kids to create a page for you and look into the other things Facebook has to offer. With your business sense, experience & marketing know how & their Facebook knowledge you can make a great team.

3. Just not your thing but suppose you better get this Facebook thing happening? Then pay someone else to do it for you. HexFX Design & other web companies do this sort of thing all the time. We build your profile, pages, add in all your details, photos, write on your wall, place the ads, create the badges, research the members - you name we do it!
Call or email us to find out our affordable rates & more information.

If you are a competent Facebook user:
- link your website to the comments on your wall - this is very important
- continue maintaining & adding to your page or group page
- email or contact your members or friends constantly, let them know about new offers, products & services
- write on your wall regularly - keep people up to date
- offer specials just to Facebook users (add a special photo for people to print off & bring in store or email through)
- offer a Facebook referrer reward through suggest a friend (this requires a bit of management but works well)

There is a limitless list of things you can do & ways to use Facebook to your advantage, you just have to be creative & think outside the box.

Email Setup in Outlook

Post By BLOGADMIN in Tutorials

So you have just organised your domain name & setup your email accounts with your web hosting provider, but now what??

Lets get started...

Most businesses use Microsoft Outlook to manage their emails & it is what we recommend all of our clients use.
(Don't get confused with Microsoft Outlook Express, this is an older email 'client' with less functionality & stability.)

Outlook is able to manage lots of emails coming in each day, you have the ability to include an image in your email signature - easily, there is a calender for appointment scheduling & reminders, address book for your contacts as well as a task manager.
Check out these features when you have time, they are really great.

Here is a step by step guide on how to setup a standard POP3 email account in Outlook (version 2003, 2007 & 2010):
Make sure you have your user name, password & all information give to you by your hosting provider in front of you.

1. Open Outlook
2. At the top menu bar, look for Tools
3. Select Tools & scroll down to Account Settings
4. Select New
5. Choose an email service, make sure you have the blue dot in the Microsoft Exchange, POP3, IMAP or HTTP option
6. Click Next
7. At the bottom of this window, select the Tick Box: Manually configure server settings....
8. Click Next
9. On the next window, make sure the blue dot is in the Internet Email option
10. Click Next
11. Enter in your name (I like to put:   first name - business name)
12. Enter in your email address
13. Leave account type as POP3
14. Enter in your Incoming Mail Server (This is give to you by your hosting provider)
15. Enter in your Outgoing Mail Server (This is who your internet is with, download a list of Australian internet providers here)
16. Enter your user name (This is give to you by your hosting provider)
17. Enter in your password (This is give to you by your hosting provider, often CASE SENSITIVE so be careful)
18. Leave Remember Password ticked
19. Do not tick Require logon using Secure Password Authentication unless told to by your hosting provider)
20. Click on the button, Test Account Settings
21. You should have all green ticks for each test & a test email will come through from Microsoft

If you do not see this & have a red cross on one of the options, go through the process again, CHECK all details carefully, check spelling & do it slowly. Rushing this process if you are unsure can result in frustration & no email.

If after the third failed attempt to successfully setup your email, please contact your hosting provider. Depending on your hosting provider's server security settings you may find that a series of incorrect entries may get you banned altogether.

EBook Formats

Post By BLOGADMIN in General Discussion

So what's this about format?

HexFX uses a couple of formats to produce ebooks. Our two most popular is PDF and EPUB.

PDF
A PDF is a Portable Document Format, the rest is taken from Wiki:

"A file format created by Adobe Systems, initially to provide a standard form for storing and editing printed publishable documents. Because PDF documents can easily be viewed and printed by users on a variety of computer platforms, they are very common on the internet.

PDF files typically contain brochures, product manuals, magazine articles — up to entire books, as they can embed fonts, images, and other documents. A PDF file contains one or more zoomable page images.

Since the format is designed to reproduce page images, the text traditionally could not be re-flowed to fit the screen width or size. As a result PDF files designed for printing on standard paper sizes are less easily viewed on screens with limited size or resolution, such as those found on mobile phones and PDAs.

PDF files are supported on the following e-book readers: Mobipocket, iRex iLiad, iRex DR1000, Sony Reader, Bookeen Cybook, Foxit eSlick, Amazon Kindle (1, 2, International & DX), Barnes & Noble Nook, the iPad, and the Kobo eReader.

EPUB
The .epub or OEBPS format is an open standard for e-books created by the International Digital Publishing Forum (IDPF).
It combines three IDPF open standards:
Open Publication Structure (OPS) 2.0, which describes the content markup (either XHTML or Daisy DTBook)
Open Packaging Format (OPF) 2.0, which describes the structure of an .epub in XML
OEBPS Container Format (OCF) 1.0, which bundles files together (as a renamed ZIP file)

Currently, the format can be read by the Kobo eReader, Apple iPad, Barnes and Noble Nook, Sony Reader, BeBook, Bookeen Cybook v. 2.0,COOL-ER, Adobe Digital Editions, Lexcycle Stanza, BookGlutton, AZARDI, Aldiko and WordPlayer on Android and the Mozilla Firefox add-on OpenBerg Lector.

Several other reader software programs are currently implementing support for the format, such as dotReader, FBReader, Mobipocket, uBook and Okular. Another software .epub reader, Lucidor, is in beta. Additionally, the Stanza application for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad can read ePub files offline.

Other formats we offer are html and plain text.

Here is a chart of hardware versus ebook format for you to consider:

HexFX recommends CALIBRE to manage your ebooks. This amazing, simple to use piece of software enables you to manage, convert, synchronise and view all your ebooks in one location. I use it and I love it! If you can, donate to their cause.

What is an ebook?

Post By BLOGADMIN in General Discussion

What is an ebook?
According to Wiki, "an e-book (short for electronic book and also known as a digital book, ebook, and eBook) is an e-text that forms the digital media equivalent of a conventional printed book, sometimes restricted with a digital rights management system. An e-book, as defined by the Oxford Dictionary of English, is "an electronic version of a printed book which can be read on a personal computer or hand-held device designed specifically for this purpose".

E-books are usually read on dedicated hardware devices known as e-Readers or e-book devices. Personal computers and mobile devices, such as iPhone and BlackBerry, and on dedicated eReaders such as the Kobo or Sony Reader.

Early e-books were generally written for specialty areas and a limited audience, meant to be read only by small and devoted interest groups. The scope of the subject matter of these e-books included technical manuals for hardware, manufacturing techniques, and other subjects. The ease of transferring and storing electronic files gave people the growing opportunities to not have to print all their documents, books, and writings.

Due to exclusiveness and limited readerships of e-books, the fractured market of independents and specialty authors lacked consensus regarding a standard for packaging and selling e-books. E-books continued to gain in their own underground markets. Many e-book publishers began distributing books that were in the public domain. At the same time, authors with books that were not accepted by publishers offered their works online so they could be seen by others. Unofficial (and occasionally unauthorized) catalogs of books became available over the web, and sites devoted to e-books began disseminating information about e-books to the public.

As of 2009, new marketing models for e-books were being developed and dedicated reading hardware was produced. E-books (as opposed to ebook readers) have yet to achieve global distribution. In the United States, as of September 2009, the Amazon Kindle model and Sony's PRS-500 were the dominant ereading devices. By March 2010, some reported that the Barnes & Noble nook may be selling more units than the Kindle. On January 27, 2010 Apple, Inc. launched a multi-function device called the iPad and announced agreements with five of the six largest publishers that would allow Apple to distribute e-books. However, not all authors have endorsed the concept of electronic publishing. J.K Rowling, author of the Harry Potter series, has stated that there will be no e-versions of her books."

Can anyone write a ebook?
Well, yes. As mentioned in the explanation from Wiki above, ebooks originated from technical manuals and speciality areas for selected audiences. The key to the success of an ebook, is like any book; the marketing and distribution. A person or an author can write a short story, a collection of articles, a novel, a manual, anything that comes to mind, however there must be an audience to receive it.

How do I publish an ebook?
That's where we come in.
Authors have many options when it comes to publishing their ebook, one of these key options is the format the book is published in. HexFX uses several publishing formats depending on the author's requirements. Our most popular is PDF & EPUB.

Tip: We recommend writing your ebook in Microsoft Word, WordPad or OpenOffice Writer and keeping text formatting to a minimum.
